"Master of The Musicals"
Peter Corry- Grand Opera House, Belfast
Peter Corry's return to the Grand Opera House proved why he thoroughly deserves the title' Master of the Musicals'.
From the moment the curtain lifted to reveal Peter, clad all in black, sitting on a stool, singing Sentimental Journey with just a pianist accompanying him, until the end of the show, the popular performer never failed to impress as he took the audience on their own journey through a rich and varied musical landscape.
With an impressive band behind him, Peter was celebrating 10 years as a professional performer. And it was surely a fitting and enjoyable reflection of his past decade on stage.
The versatile singer moved effortlessley from the familiar ' I'll know when my love comes along' (from Guys & Dolls) to' This is the moment ' from Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, from Accenuate the positive, which Bing Crosby sang in the 1940's, to Queen's hit Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
Throw in the Lord Chancellor's song, Love Unrequited from Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe, and Kieran Goss's Reason to Leave, and you get some idea just how talented and strong a performer he is.
Peter also included songs from his most recent performance in the world premier of On Eagle's Wing at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. Indeed, his special guest at his concert in the Grand Opera House was Alyth McCormack, the leading lady from On Eagle's Wing who sang a lament from the show, contemporary Scottish songs and a somewhat restrained duet, Baby it's Cold Outside, with Peter. The second half opened with a George & Ira Gershwin medley which got a huge cheer from the audience.
Then thet joined Peter Corry as he sang Little Ole Wine Drinker Me, which he has just recorded with Ulster actor, James Nesbitt. And, of course, no show by Peter would be complete without several songs from Les Miserables in which he spent three years playing Inspector Javert.
